Two Trees’ “Sustainably Matured™” initiative aims to significantly reduce the spirits industry’s reliance on wood and lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout a product’s life cycle. Their sustainable maturation process uses less than 10% of the wood required in traditional barrel aging, potentially decreasing wood dependency by 90%.
With traditional aging, oak barrels are in short supply, as only one to three barrels can be produced from a single tree, leading to deforestation that impacts CO2 absorption. In contrast, Two Trees can produce the equivalent of 50 barrels using just two trees, dramatically reducing the environmental impact.
This method accelerates maturation, allowing spirits to reach peak quality in a fraction of the time while minimizing risks. This efficiency also decreases warehousing space, energy use, and aging loss, known as the “angel’s share,” which can reduce product yield by up to 20%. By addressing both GHG emissions and aging loss, Two Trees contributes to a more sustainable spirits industry while mitigating issues like whiskey fungus caused by ethanol evaporation.
